Meaningful Inclusion

MeaningfulInclusion is MarkusPetz's deepest value in life.

MyFoodStory

Meaningful Inclusion as part of My Food Story has been split by Markus Petz into 4 elements:

These are somewhat arbitrary and also exclude certain other categories. For example incidental by-standers, ecology (the natural environment and geo-physical results of crop production and agriculture). Although indirectly these are included as everything is connected through the ecosystem.

However the approach has been to focus on the anthropological and social aspects from a very anthropocentric viewpoint for the purposes of this project.

Each element is being run by a different subteam. You can read more about the individual subteams and elements on their respective pages.

The crop Tea and Tisane were chosen; though other crops could also be used.

See MarkusPetz/MeaningfulInclusion for a greater discussion on other aspects.

See www.groups.yahoo.com/group/meaningfulinclusion for the mailing lab. Though stories should be posted through the My Food Story interface rather than the mailing list.

On 3 Feb 2007 Markus and Andrius chatted and focused the concept of Meaningful Inclusion and its relevance to MY FOOD STORY. The chat identified the Technology of societal responsibility. So a question to explore is

How can individual and collective efficacies be empowered without sacrificing individual liberty nor cultivating societal decadence (liberal but not libertine being the goal)?

and within this question is What socio-economic arrangement is the best motivation for tea workers?

Sasha: Markus, I have read some time ago a wonderful book about life on Polynesian Island Raroia. I think it is a beautiful example of meaningful inclusion. Everyone is included in social life. There is (was) no government, no corporations, everyone is satisfied, everyone have enough food (fish, coco nuts) and everyone enough money (coconuts) for luxury. The book is written by Bengt Danielsson , he was an member of the famous Kon-Tiki raft expedition. Raroia society as he described it was a utopia for me.

What I mean by Meaningful Inclusion.

Meaningful Inclusion can be explained by also looking at the opposite. Meaningless Exclusion. So we also come across the alternatives of Meaningless Inclusion and Meaningful Exclusion.

However, it is a concept that has been explored a little already at the personal and the societal level. Although so far there is less exploration at the ecological level it is something that could easily be applied there too.

Personal Level

The best exploration has been with the concept of Maslow's Heirachy of Needs. Ultimately climbing Maslow's Peak leads to a sound psychological framework for an individual and possibly happiness too. Also healthly and comfortable. It can be debated wether all elements are needed, but one of them, belonging, is certainly present in most humans. Others, such as a home, can be questioned with nomadology. Basic food security can be different from a highly nutritious balanced diet. Such a balanced diet may be needed in order for an individual to function at some of, in Maslow's view, the higher levels.

Societal Level

At the Societal Level it has been explored with social exclusion and social inclusion agendas. These happen with politcs being inclusive, grass-roots and truly democratic. The Ladder of Participation is a good example of how this can happen effectively. Though there is some debate about if Anarchism or Large Machines are better for running society. Machines such as Hobbes described in his Leviathan have flip sides.

Ecological Level

At the ecological level it can be explained by having a reverence for, and cherishing man's place in nature. Although the crown of thorns star fish plague could be an example where meaningful inclusion is not there in practice, where man plays no part. Here more traditional societies and Earth based religions often have a better understanding, as they do not raise man nor human society above the natural systems.

Use

Meaningful inclusion can be used to see if the best approach has been taken and to explore all the options. However it is a STATE not a PROCESS.

Assessing Meaningful Inclusion. My Food Story has collected some stories on Tea and Tisane to show where Meaningful Inclusion exists in practice. These states can then be taken as examples for rĂ´le-modelling, bench marking and other processes. Elements in common can be collected as a technology. Technology being applied science. This application can then lead to greater social economy, reduced costs, better crops etc.

This can be seen above (in the MyFoodStory section).
