Minimalist Telecentres In the Mendenyo Yahoo Group, we were discussing an idea for Minimalist Telecentres with 1 computer, or 'A Telecentre in a box'. It's basically, whether one can start a Telecentre with a tiny amount of money, with one computer and a combined printer/scanner/copier, starting offline with just a flash-drive/CD Sneakernet connection to the outside world, then re-invest the profits to grow it organically into a larger multi-computer centre with internet access.
If it works, then a small amount of money could 'seed' Telecentres in every town or village. We would just need to start one or two as a 'proof of concept'.
When a Telecentre has grown into a larger 10 seat facility, it could provide the 'seed money' to start another Minimalist Telecentre in the next village or a completely different area. This could be as a public-sprited donation or as a commercial exercise, building a large chain of Telecentres.
Please go to the Mendenyo discusssion group in Yahoo Groups and search for 'minimalist telecentres' (note the spelling). The oldest, lowest numbered message 526 is the idea that I posted, then there is a whole thread of replies.

See especially David Mutua's reply with some useful information about what works and what doesn't, from his experience running Telecentres -
He mentions how traditional funding from family, friends and neighbours
compares well with micro-financing, and he makes many other good points.
