Sustainable livehoods
On malaria and data collection in Rusinga we have been collecting data on the occurrences of mosquitoes and breeding sites for several years now. Why? Because, to control the Malaria mosquitoes; we have to know it! We need basic information for planning our intervention, which is actual in the breeding sites. We need to identify our target population; we are therefore collecting data to address,
If there are malaria causing mosquitoes in the area and which ones, at what time of the year regarding season?
How high is the density of the Malaria vectors in the area ( larvae and adults)?
When is the density highest in the year?
Which other mosquitoes are around that are not malaria mosquitoes and how many?
What are the different mosquito breeding sites?
Are the breeding sites available throughout the year?
How do the breeding place look like, how do they differ?
How can we prevent mosquito breeding in the various sites?
How to distinguish between the habitats?
We were assisted by National Institute of Health based in USA for two years. The project was named Community empowerment for Malaria Control for Africa . Now we have formed the Rusinga Malaria Project which is from the empowered community members. I am involved in as malaria resource person in charge of data collection and analysis. We were supposed to start actual control on the breeding sites and this was to take the second phase of the project. We didn’t receive funds. We have to combined ICT training for youths, and women with Malaria programme, we cannot leave one behind for literacy purposes.
These and much more information is done throughout the year now in Rusinga Island by 70 malaria surveillance team members (MST) who are volunteers. In our survey we try to characterize the breeding sites (water bodies) we find to get an idea on which sites are the most attractive ones for malaria causing Mosquito to breed in. We are going to use this number to train them in using open source software to maintain data collection.

Many women are left vulnerable and total orphans are in the increase, cast a vote and help one OVC person here!!!!!!!''
Who We Are?
In response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, dozens of community-based organizations in SUBA District and the surrounding areas have been established to deliver services to people living with HIV/AIDS and to their loved ones. Udogo youth group responded to this HIV/AIDS epidemic by serving as a primary source of information to community. Subsequently, the Udogo youth development group of Rusinga island was formally created in 1996 with grants from the Christian Children's Fund , with additional trainings from the organization which is a CBO working in Rusinga island in providing vital services to the members until 2004.
Udogo youth has an outreach programs involved in enlighten community on HIV/AIDS prevention, malaria control programs, deworming, underfive growth monitoring, monitoring pregnant mothers, community education, trainnings on primary health care programs and agro-forestry dealing with Environment
and this group was formed to make the community understand themselves and develop from whatever natural resources they have, designed as a means of putting community based youth organizations in touch with an extensive knowledge of their community and the world at large. It was designed on the premise that information will support and strengthen those people affected by infectious diseases, poverty, illitracy, children dropping out of school, child survival and those who cannot provide for their needs.
UDOGO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT GROUP is dedicated to enhancing the health, Education and eradication of poverty to the public and, in particular, to addressing issues in primary health care.
The group is a leader in the field of primary Health care, child and family development issues, and an independent voice to advance the well being of all people. With the help from Christian children's Fund the group therefore has a wider experience on primary health care,HV/AIDS prevention, behaviour change programme, child survival, tree planting as one of the largest projects going on now in the island, and Christian children's fund is the only single international organization but community based and their trainings to the community is proven , this is where Udogo members and we need help to help the community which so far ravaged by poverty and lack infrastructure and luck of proper medical care.
We therefore registered with the ministry of culture, gender and sports to help network this community through Education and behavior change. This needs a centre of a community resource where they can be mobilized to know their conditions, which can be very educative and people can be gather to learn the available resources and this is Udogo members can manage and open it to the general public.
The Udogo maintains strong relationship with community and important collections in areas associated with HIV/AIDS such as fish beaches which are scattered all over the island and has out of school energetic young men and women with experience in HIV/AIDS related information resources. Since its inception, the information services and technical support have been provided through seminars and workshops held around here, this advantage is due to Udogo being a composite group formed with members all over the island and enlighten out of school youths.
We are still not stationed and when we get funds we would have a cultural centre in Rusinga where we can train the community.
See my proposal at Crafts.

- Dream=My dream is a community sustainable agriculture. I've a dream to keep myself fed and enable about 772 villagers access Tilapia their staple food, source of protein, commercial earner and make it sustainable to our livelihood. The people have been depending on this fish trade for decades but due to too much pressure of famine, destruction of vegetation and fishing pressure. I really dream of an integrated fish farming in a FishPond. My preliminary finding shows that it can be started with Kenya shillings 130,000 (about 1750 USD) which can run to close at 200,000 or so (about 2700 USD) to make it sustainable and transferable to the next generation. After several consultations with my comrades in Networks in Mendenyo, Rusinga island, the Kawala Women development group who appear on a picture in my profile in MS wiki, Udogo youth Development, YUVA (Youth for Unity and Voluntary Actions), RIDFI (Rusinga Island Youth Development Forum Initiative) all registered with the government and based in Rusinga Island in the New district of Mbita! We are working on 'A Living hope is desire'. If sustainability in Agriculture can sustain livelihood, then Enviromental friendly will be a long vested venture amongst dreams to create water catchment. My hope is to have specialist volunteers locally and internationally to aid this dream. A volunteer house can be constructed to save expenses, logical food security.

June 5, 2009: Hello, Leon, Kerry, Janet, Andrius,
I'm happy to see Leon and Kerry join us in MS LAB; Kerry, you remember putting online at Modo Fac Central in 2005 and pleasure to see you here applause for you.
I've been putting myself offline to find reasons, why there is to much water borne diseases around lake victoria? There is an out break of malaria here, this is because of low cost mosquito nets which cannot protect the people the mosquito will come in and bit. Another fact i am finding reason; is why many young girls start school but end up not completing studies compared to boys?
At safe water system training, i took for five days, i found out that people are not poor because of wealth, mmh! We are poor because of health, worms, lack of sanitary intervention. I'm working with women who could not haue meals,i thank Andrius and others for supporting. At a special unit at a school for physically challenged children, i donated four mattresses because the children are in lack of bedings.
If there is a matter of need then safe water accessibility and proper health care is a priority for poor villagers! Oh the girls dropout of school due to sanitary needs, because they can not discuss it with their parents, some use old mattress, old cloths for sanitary and monthly! Do not assume facts but facts when you interview door to door, our social gatherings. Word of mouth cannot help. The help age people are waiting to die! Pathetic? "Talk it loud and help non but go to the people"
Sustainability is broad eh! Where does it start? For the next weeks of June 2009 i am asking what's your sustaibility strategy? Start with a handful understanding people, go to them, ask questions and have your answers.
I can access interenet but rates high, i can have computers but maintening them is a hell with a poor browser. What a challenged world?
I ask and live by asking.
I'll be kept informed.
Samwel.
