The origin of the name "The Pyramid of Peace"
The Pyramid of Peace - This Minciu Sodas bottom-up approach is becoming known as the "Pyramid of Peace". The name was inspired by one of our activists, Kenneth Owino, who leads a troupe of acrobats in one of the Nairobi slums. He reported, early on, how the acrobats defied those who were trying to cause separation between the tribes. Despite coming from "opposing tribes" they remained together - going out with fellow entertainers - drummers and singers.
They were tumbling, drumming and singing for peace - working collaboratively in their usual way - and that included acrobats supporting each other in a human pyramid - a pyramid of peace. You can see the event here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vGTiRlR5Ak
(An extract from Pam McLean's message on this page).
The latest version of the Minciu Sodas Pyramid of Peace presentation - we hope to have an updated version by the week commencing 11th February 2008.

Children of God,
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
You are children of God, for you do as God does. God is Creator, and
you are co-creators. Make peace among us, the peace God makes in each
of us, the day of rest within our hearts. I share with you my vision of
peace. I ask you for your vision of peace, and also, your vision of

The first thing that came to mind when I read the title "Corporate

45 billion dollars.
It would seem a natural, that Bill Gates and The Pyramid of Peace get to
become really cozy, really fast and that Minciu Sodas's current endeavour could
be secured into a front line corporate pet project, in which could be deployed
all the liberty of innovation in the economic realm of socio-cultural
development

I spoke with Dennis Kimambo and he's very supportive of my plan to focus
our resources on engaging and befriending the benevolent Kalenjins. The
only reliable way to send funds so far has been through Dennis and
Kennedy. Dennis will be able to take the lead here.
We have at least $2,000 that they will convert to phone credits and
distribute to benevolent Kalenjins. The phone credits are valuable as
currency because:
- They can be easily moved across the country.
- They are in short supply and selling at a premium in many places.
- They can be traded directly for food, medicine, transport with anybody
else who has a phone (or simply needs to make a call).
Trade brings people together. Dennis told me of Maureen who was in
Nauche where they were surrounded by Kalenjins. She sold her phone
along with the credits she received to one of the Kalenjins who then
provided her and several others safe transit out of the region and now
they are safe. So now that's one Kalenjin in the heart of the problem
who is a "friend" who whom we can send phone credits to, I think to
excellent effect.
Here is the outline of my plan. Dennis will organize a team, and
depending on who is available, Samwel, Kennedy and others might organize
subteams. Our "workers" will receive a portion of the funds, say 10% of
the total. They will make calls to people who are Kalenjins or may know
Kalenjins and are willing to have their telephone posted on the Internet
and provide news and report on who needs what help.
If a Kenyan alerts us to a Kalenjin who can help or is in need that we
weren't aware of, then our team member calls that Kalenjin.
If that Kalenjin also agrees to have us post their telephone on the
Internet provide news and report on who needs their help, then we reward
both of them with X phone credits each.
That way we win an ever increasing web of Kalenjins and reward those who
help us engage them, too. And they can keep earning more credits by
helping us report more people. And we keep reaching out to the people
who are more vulnerable. We keep focusing on the people who can help
the most or who are the most vulnerable.
Also please collect emails if they are interested to be in touch that way.
We need to contact the Catholic Bishop or his staff and also those at
the many churches in the Eldoret diocese
http://www.cdekenya.org/directory.htm
The Kalenjins don't have to be in the Eldoret area but I imagine that's
most important and we should focus on the most vulnerable.

Pamela McLean:
Pyramid of Peace - A response to the turmoil in Kenya
Pyramid of Peace was initiated by Kenyans caught up in the post election turmoil. Thanks to communication technologies they were not isolated. They had phones, and they already had friends in other countries through the Internet - especially through Minciu Sodas (Lithuanian for "Orchard of Thoughts'). In the first days of turmoil, and in the days since, Minciu Sodas has been collecting information, sending financial help, and thinking creatively about how to diffuse violence and provide positive ways forward. Gradually the work has taken a shape which we call the 'Pyramid of Peace'
Practical individual action
Minciu Sodas activists in Kenya are using money and phone credits that we send to do whatever is needed such as:
- Sharing their phones so that displaced people can contact loved ones
- Providing immediate aid where needed (they can barter telephone minutes for food, medicines, and transport etc)
- Giving up-to-date information to Red Cross etc about local needs
- Maintaining communication and collaboration across tribal barriers
- Giving support to known peacemakers and people who can exert a calming influence on those involved in violence.
- Working with displaced people - organising activities for children, providing up-to-date information and encouragement to help reduce confusion, conflict and despair.
- Contacting security services about needs for help
- Sharing ideas and examples of good practice with each other
- Providing accurate news to Minciu Sodas - so those of us outside Kenya can provide appropriate support.
The Pyramid of Peace
This Minciu Sodas bottom-up approach is becoming known the "Pyramid of Peace". To see Kenneth and the nafsi africa acrobats in action (last year) click here. The Minciu Sodas Pyramid of Peace is supporting activists now, to deal with immediate needs, and is also bringing together individual initiatives within a longer term strategy. Donations can be made by Paypal, or gift-aided, or made direct to activists' phones.
Donations by Paypal
Donations can be sent by PayPal to Andrius Kulikauskas at his email address which is ms@... (lt for Lithuania). Andrius is director of Minciu Sodas . He has the most up-to-date information of what is happening on the ground. If you have any particular wishes for how the money should be spent he will follow them, otherwise he will pass it on according to current priorities.
To gift-aid your donation
If you are in the UK and want to gift-aid your donation it can be sent via CAWD The disadvantage of giving via CAWD is that it is a bit slower, but the benefit is that you increase the value of your gift. When the organisation which handles online donations has a total of £100, then it adds the £28 potential tax rebate (minus a small handling fee) and passes the increased gift on to CAWD, which passes it all on to Andrius by Paypal. To target your gift in a any particular way please complete the 'personal message' box.
Direct donations
Donations can be sent directly to our Pyramid of Peace grassroots activists as phone credits. You can find their phone numbers, more details of their work, and information on how to send phone credits at Minciu Sodas
- Please circulate this information -
- Thank you for anything that you do to help -

Lyrics for song
Here are some thoughts to inspire lyrics of a theme song (album?) for the Pyramid of Peace.
Intimacy of Peace
The intimate quality of Peace
is born from the safety of inner justice.
Inner justice is the gift of God,
offered in the divine ministry of reconciliation,
in which we, humans, find forgiveness
and the delivrance from what we are forgiven!
As I grow in the land of inner justice, peace becomes my home.
God's cultivation of who I am, takes me from the militant march of peer pressure
to the radiant danse of joy, where BEING governs HAVING and DOING!
As my intimacy heats up with my own Inner Peace,
I am then equipped to get on the journey from stranger to family.
Knowing my own limitations, I am content to love my neighbour as myself,
rising gracefully in the flow of the Spirit from each one's inner most being.
The task at hand, is to overcome evil with good
coupled with the courage to grow in the authenticity of love;
that is the personal and communal experience of
The Intimate quality of Peace born in the strength of God's inner justice....amen!!!

I wonder how this would perform in a computer and i back the idea of training a few people to develop this from experienced and established Telecentres.
We could also have a few TOTs train and then have them train others on this technology. Its seeming like technology is getting simpler by the minute all we need is to embrace it in order to be in touch with the global community. What do you say
Added to EmmanuelNormanNakhokho Fri, 15 Feb 2008 20:43:29 UTC Norman: Dear friends,
Here is the story filled by the Bamasaba community of Mbale but staying in New York l hope you will enjoy the site and find it interesting.
Mbale is bordered by the Republic of Kenya in the East, Tororo District in the West, Kumi district in North West, and Kapchorwa district in North East. Mbale district has an area of 2756 sq. km land area of 2504 sq. km and then land covered by 5300 hectares of forest.
The area receives two seasons of rainfall i.e. March-May and July -October.
The community is located 40 km East of Mbale town while in Mbale town you board vehicles of Bududa (taxis) and you get out from Bubiita Sub County and then ask for good Samaritan orphan/needy school.
The community lies on the slopes of Mt. Elgon in Bunabumali village, Buwali parish, Bubiita Sub County, Manjiya county, Mbale district but currently Bududa district.
The district is highly blessed with a number of tourist attractions i.e. beautiful sceneries, bamboo forests, water falls, foothills, rocks, climate, giant Afro-alpine groundsels and lobelias, plenty of food stuffs, and vegetables, elgon fish(bamboos-malewa), caves, circumcision ceremony during even years and the nearby Sabiny who circumcise both female and male and this occasion attracts very many people from outside countries.
Mt Elgon national park which inhabits different species of flowers and wild animals (Eco systems) this has lead to tourist to come to Mbale year after year, season after season.
The community is well served with good social services for example roads all the way from Kampala to the community premises. The communication network is strong and security is provided at all times despite some ups and downs as Uganda being a third world country
The transport fares keep on varying i.e. Kampala to Mbale town: Ug shs 8000 to 15000 and then from Mbale town to Bubiita sub county :1500 to 3000 the district has good schools for both primary and secondary but a bit expensive for the orphans/needy children to access/manage. The location of where the school is located can also easily be assessed

One thing did catch my eyes though from this page and I quote "I work as a software developer (PHP/MySQL, Python, Microsoft Access and more). I also organize teams, consult on projects, and summarize regulations. I invent things like interfaces and protocols. I am interested to try something new!" - end of quote. Im undertaking some self-studies on web design and im not getting anywhere with PHP, MYSQL and Database creation in general. I get most of my study material from the internet so my humble request is that if you have some e-books you can send me on this, I would really appreciate.
Thanks and You are an inspiration.

I dont understand local history well enough to comment apart from saying one thing that applies to human beings everywhere as far as I can see.
Democracy does not exist as a system if the choice is between 2 leaders representing 2 groups of people who hate the other so much that whichever is elected will beat or cheat the heck out of the others people.
One method that has occasionally taken a nation from "non-democracy" to democracy is www.deep-democracy.net/
Its not a panacea but it does map out minimum conditions needed to believe democracy can sustain rights of all

I was in contact with a group who were establishing a project with UN funding to research land rights and perhaps this may be something to investigate. The group are advocate for the Henry George principle of taxation based only on land rental value.
Their aim is to find a way to give land access to poorer people.

I have to wonder if the solution to African problems isn't in traditional African social structures. If you can get your hands on the books, I would highly recommend them.
Not being African, I won't presume to understand nor assume that I know the solutions.
I WOULD like to listen to and watch the development.
