Patterns In The Making

ChristopherAlexander's theory of pattern languages is very relevant to our efforts to learn how we can design GlobalVillages. The idea of a Pattern is very fruitful but it is difficult to apply in practice in our changing world because it requires an analysis of successful examples whereas often they don't yet exist.

PatternsInTheMaking is a phrase that allows us to speak of potential patterns.

PagesPatternSummary
LettuceFresh lettuce can be grown to maturity in 4 weeks in hydroponic systems with yields of a head of lettuce per square foot per week. This makes a good entry crop for scaleable production systems with high earning potential.
MicroHouseSteveBosserman is developing the idea of a small independent house as a flexible unit for FamilyLiving.
OpenSourceEcology/CompressedEarthBlockMarcinJakubowski is designing an inexpensive, high performance (3-5 blocks per minute), hydraulic-powered compressed earth block machine. This machine allows one to make one's own structural blocks from on-site soil. Compressed earth blocks, under proper quality control, are an advanced building material. See http://pages.sbcglobal.net/fwehman/AECTOverview.html for a description of the building method.
OpenSourceEcology/SawmillMarcinJakubowski has designed, built and documented a sawmill. His sawmill is key tool in his building houses for himself and others. He is able to make lumber from trees on his land.
PermaculturePermaculture is a strategy for humans to live compactly in small communities engulfed by nature.
StrawbaleStrawbale houses are a do-it-yourself technology that uses natural local materials to make for liveable and modifiable homes. They encourage a communal approach to helping out with building.
