Welcome

Welcome! This is a wiki organized by the MinciuSodas laboratory for serving and organizing IndependentThinkers. We're invited to work on our projects here, openly and in the PublicDomain. See also our work this year to HelpKenyans.

We are winners of the KnightNewsChallenge for our idea to develop an Includer so our African participants could read and write emails at home, store them on a USB flash drive, upload and download them at their Internet cafe, and thereby participate in our online community.

Currently, we're organizing our work, so that we know what to focus on:

  • Investigations - at the heart of our culture are questions that we don't know the answer to, but wish to answer.
  • Prospects - we are looking for clients for whom we might organize global teams of hundreds of workers
  • Endeavors - we are mapping out "conceptual ecosystems" for our many endeavors
  • Tasks - we should think through our working together
  • Interface - we should improve our online interfaces
  • Challenges - organize our endeavors in terms of challenges and make plans for them

Added to MinimalistTelecentre Fri, 15 Feb 2008 20:23:56 UTC Ronald Omondi: Hi Ricardo i like your idea of Tele centers using a phone and maybe one computer. I managed to enable my motorola l6 phone this week from Safaricom, the advice from the attendant was that its a bit hard with small phones but i have succesfully visited the google site but not yahoo. I wonder how this would perform in a computer and i back the idea of training a few people to develop this from experienced and established Telecentres. We could also have a few TOTs train and then have them train others on this technology. Its seeming like technology is getting simpler by the minute all we need is to embrace it in order to be in touch with the global community. What do you say

Added to EmmanuelNormanNakhokho Fri, 15 Feb 2008 20:43:29 UTC Norman: Dear friends,

Here is the story filled by the Bamasaba community of Mbale but staying in New York l hope you will enjoy the site and find it interesting.

Mbale is bordered by the Republic of Kenya in the East, Tororo District in the West, Kumi district in North West, and Kapchorwa district in North East. Mbale district has an area of 2756 sq. km land area of 2504 sq. km and then land covered by 5300 hectares of forest.

The area receives two seasons of rainfall i.e. March-May and July -October. The community is located 40 km East of Mbale town while in Mbale town you board vehicles of Bududa (taxis) and you get out from Bubiita Sub County and then ask for good Samaritan orphan/needy school.

The community lies on the slopes of Mt. Elgon in Bunabumali village, Buwali parish, Bubiita Sub County, Manjiya county, Mbale district but currently Bududa district.

The district is highly blessed with a number of tourist attractions i.e. beautiful sceneries, bamboo forests, water falls, foothills, rocks, climate, giant Afro-alpine groundsels and lobelias, plenty of food stuffs, and vegetables, elgon fish(bamboos-malewa), caves, circumcision ceremony during even years and the nearby Sabiny who circumcise both female and male and this occasion attracts very many people from outside countries.

Mt Elgon national park which inhabits different species of flowers and wild animals (Eco systems) this has lead to tourist to come to Mbale year after year, season after season.

The community is well served with good social services for example roads all the way from Kampala to the community premises. The communication network is strong and security is provided at all times despite some ups and downs as Uganda being a third world country

The transport fares keep on varying i.e. Kampala to Mbale town: Ug shs 8000 to 15000 and then from Mbale town to Bubiita sub county :1500 to 3000 the district has good schools for both primary and secondary but a bit expensive for the orphans/needy children to access/manage. The location of where the school is located can also easily be assessed

One thing did catch my eyes though from this page and I quote "I work as a software developer (PHP/MySQL, Python, Microsoft Access and more). I also organize teams, consult on projects, and summarize regulations. I invent things like interfaces and protocols. I am interested to try something new!" - end of quote. Im undertaking some self-studies on web design and im not getting anywhere with PHP, MYSQL and Database creation in general. I get most of my study material from the internet so my humble request is that if you have some e-books you can send me on this, I would really appreciate. Thanks and You are an inspiration.

Added to SandBox Wed, 05 Mar 2008 16:58:53 UTC ThomasChepaitis: There is a guide in the LearnToUseThisWiki:

so you should make your usernames and passwords yourself

No Wiki Password?

First solution : ask for one and you will have one. When you get the password dont forget to use it in a proper way. For example my username is SashaMrkailo - Note there is no space between name and surname and that is the proper way to write your username. Also note the big case letters, so if I write Sasha Mrkailo the username is wrong. Also if I write sashamrkailo I will not be able to login. Password is also case sensitive.

Second solution:

* username Visitor * password Visitor

Added to EricWanjamah Fri, 07 Mar 2008 22:05:24 UTC chris macrae: I am agonised by Kenya because until recently it had the image of an African country that was making human progress. I dont understand local history well enough to comment apart from saying one thing that applies to human beings everywhere as far as I can see.

Democracy does not exist as a system if the choice is between 2 leaders representing 2 groups of people who hate the other so much that whichever is elected will beat or cheat the heck out of the others people.

One method that has occasionally taken a nation from "non-democracy" to democracy is www.deep-democracy.net/

Its not a panacea but it does map out minimum conditions needed to believe democracy can sustain rights of all

Added to EricWanjamah Sat, 08 Mar 2008 04:23:44 UTC Jeff.Mowatt: Eric, I have little knowledge of Kenya aside from the colonial past and present conflict. I was in contact with a group who were establishing a project with UN funding to research land rights and perhaps this may be something to investigate. I have to wonder if the solution to African problems isn't in traditional African social structures. If you can get your hands on the books, I would highly recommend them.

Not being African, I won't presume to understand nor assume that I know the solutions.

I WOULD like to listen to and watch the development.

Added to success Sat, 08 Mar 2008 19:27:04 UTC thomaschepaitis: I just wanted to say, that success is hard to achieve, when others are "putting sticks into your wheels", as the proverb goes, as it's usual in a competitive society. Competition is fostered and praised in USA or other countries, but for me, f.e. it's very hard to be successfull in these frames, mostly because I feel pity for the losers. So I don't believe much in a success, gainded in competition - it causes envy and other negative effects. But i believe in a success as described by Hannington, as reaching personal success while helping others around to be successfull too. We can call it a "Level success", or "Raising a success wave"

Since the high costs of broadband here in Serbia , I had made an "interhome" network consisting of me , my brother who lives in a flat below my and my neighbor who lives in a home next to my. We all three used one cable "modem". The main problem was that we didnt ave a router so , my computer had always to be on as it acted a s a router ( it had two network cards), and we had a switch.

Added to Isep Sat, 19 Apr 2008 01:34:58 UTC Tom Wayburn: Certainly, it easy to get a well-written book published if it offers solutions to our present crisis and the looming catastrophic Malthusian dieoff that the world faces; however, in a 2005 paper at dematerialism.net/CwC.html, I took the trouble to do the energy accounting for a nation like the United States using reasonable expectations for the future supply of fossil fuels and the best possible expectations for renewable energy technologies to determine if a society with market economy - even an ideal market economy - was sustainable. It seemed reasonably evident that conservation within capitalism would permit economic growth to the point where the Malthusian dieoff would be more tragic than if nothing had been done. But, don't take my word for it; do the arithmetic yourself for any nation you wish and see if, according to your best lights, Muhammad Yunus' solution is likely to succeed or to make matters even worse in the long run by postponing the necessary political changes. I am truly sorry to have to be the one who finds a serious difficulty with this well-intentioned effort.

Added to OpenSourceEcology/CompressedEarthBlock Sun, 25 May 2008 00:14:23 UTC Marcin: Troy: on a tight budget, get a surplus cylinder. Ask around - agriculture fab shops, construction equipment places. I got one for $75 here- from a farmer who had surplus cylinders.

On a car jack - if it has 20 tons of pressure, you can use it. But this defeats the entire purpose if 'high performance' is your interest. You may make 1 brick in 2-3 minutes, not 3-5 bricks per minute. This is ok if you are doing a labor of love, but not if you are interested in replicable house production.

Added to OpenSourceEcology/CompressedEarthBlock Sun, 25 May 2008 00:19:25 UTC Marcin: Another note. The CEB is NOT adobe or mud bricks. It is compressed, dry earth. It is not mud - one uses dry soil - and bricks don't need to dry before they are used. I emphasize this for you who want to do rapid building, much faster than adobe or any other form of earth construction that I know of. The entire point of this adventure is to create an extremely effective and possibly mainstreamable method of construction. Earth homes are the most abundant on Earth. With CEB, earth homes can also become abundant in the so-called 'advanced' countries.

I like seeing people appreciate each other because it gives people confidence and energy. I like seeing people emerge with confidence, energy and kindness with their good intuition fully in tact. I think appreciating each other is one of the greatest kindnesses and allows us to do more of what works with and for each other. Appreciating is like giving others the directions to our hearts. It is also a way of fully experiencing for ourselves that which we admire in others. It's a very efficient way of having it all without having to build more storage space in our living quarters or having to call in the moving trucks to accommodate all the extra goods.

After reading a favorite author of mine, Lou Fournier Marzeles; THE REALITY IMPAIRED LIFE, I found expression for my deepest value, which is acknowledgment of love and truth as being inseparable. So often we inadvertently attempt to separate love and truth from each other, as if that was possible, a frequently fatal error. In fact, they cannot be themselves and be separated from each other.

This inseparability of love and truth is something I wish to keep in mind as I appreciate and in all other areas of my life. I hope to keep track of any intention behind any appreciations to keep my motivations as pure as possible and my appreciations authentic.

I refer to my deepest value as "The Discerning Heart," so the activation of the Discerning Heart is my course of study here.
